EXPERIENCING NATURE THROUGH ART
Against a peaceful backdrop of sweet, earthly music and the aroma of nature, a new masterpiece is being brought to fruition. Norway-based Hildur Bjørnsdottir uses paint and brushes to create a nature experience through art.
Born in Iceland, where the mountains sing and lights dance across the night sky, Hildur Bjørnsdottir has always had a close relationship with the outdoors. When visiting the beach as a child, she remembers picking up a rock that had spoken to her. Feeling its salty sting against her tongue, she felt as if she was pulled into the embrace of nature, which is a feeling she seeks to express through her art.
“For me, to be human is to feel one with nature,” Bjørnsdottir says. “Having grown up in Iceland, nature has always been a source of inspiration for me.”
At the ripe age of 14, poised by an artist’s eyes and talent, Bjørnsdottir exhibited an adornment for the first time at a school gallery, where it hangs to this day. Since then, she has gone on to exhibit several projects and installations, as well as convey her love for art by teaching it on a freelance level. Believing that one can never stop learning, her younger years saw her enrol into art school in Iceland, which eventually took her to Norway where she remains to this day. Today, she functions as a bridge between the Norwegian and Icelandic art communities.
In 2020, Bjørnsdottir, as a part of being an artist in residency, was asked host some workshops and classes in Steigen, but as she arrived, the world was hurled into an unforeseeable state of isolation, quarantines and COVID. The world halted to a stop,
and so did her plans. Faced with the option of staying in Steigen and working in the large studio she had been provided or going home, Bjørnsdottir chose to stay in Steigen and use the situation to create her best piece to today.
“During those times, the only people I spoke to were the cashiers at the local Coop, so I often found myself by the water, watching the ocean embrace the kelp in a hypnotic and inspiring dance,” she explains. “I suppose the water was at many points during that period my only companion.”
Every day, after she visited the ocean, Bjørnsdottir entered the studio where she spilled her emotions on a seven-meter-long scroll. After countless hours in the company of herself, her memories and her trusted paintbrushes, Fjærlett Flørt was born. It is the piece she is most proud of to this day.
Told that her home is always in her heart, Bjørnsdottir has brought her love for the outdoors out of Iceland and continues to find inspiration in nature everywhere.
