In my studio

6 artists without studios have been invited to present their practice at Billedkunstnerne i Oslo during the event Oslo Open.

In connection with the theme of studioless artists, a panel debate with local politicians will be organised during the weekend.

I have chosen to play on the theme of ‘the unwanted artist’ or ‘the displaced’ by showing a larger work that was initially installed in public space.

The work THE LIFE BOAT was erected at an attempted commons, Losæter, in downtown Oslo in 2019, but had to be removed when Oslo municipality redirected a school road. This in turn led to Bjørvika Development’s ´City-farmer´ choosing to appropriate the space it stood for other purposes.

Re-shown in Rådhusgata 19, the work loses some of its visual impact, where it was originally meant to resemble an overturned lifeboat vis a vis the monumental installation ´Bjørvika Bakehouse´, built to resemble a rescue-boat.

By being exhibited in a new context, the work also loses its original function, as potential housing for a non-human audience.

By presenting and placing an ecological intervention such as THE LIFE BOAT in a gallery context, the work advocates a non-hierarchical relationship to the city and the life that resides here, as if asking “Who is this place for?”

///

The work will be a supple with a smaller work, SURVIVALIST SILK SHAWL (2020).

///

There will be free catalogs from previous exhibitions that the public can take with them from their visit.
