Jan Khür (b. 1989, Czech Republic) is a photographer based in Oslo, Norway, since 2010. With a BA in Photography from Tomas Bata University in Zlín, complemented by exchange studies in Volda, Norway, and The Indonesian Institute of Arts in Yogyakarta, Jan brings a diverse and global perspective to his work. His Master’s studies included an internship in Norway, where he honed his skills as a photo assistant and darkroom printer.
Jan’s photography bridges the personal and the social, combining artistic projects rooted in personal diaries with thought-provoking social documentaries. Passionate about publishing, he often creates zines and photo books and specializes in darkroom color prints. His editorial and commercial work has been featured in renowned publications such as Zeit, Friends of Friends, The Wire, and The World of Interiors.
In 2013, Jan founded Norwegian Photography Now, a platform dedicated to promoting Norwegian photography locally and internationally. As one of the curators of the 2022 Oslo Fotobokfestival, he helped spotlight photo books from across the globe. Currently, he is developing a podcast series on Norwegian photography in collaboration with the Nearest Truth platform.

In my studio
In my studio, visitors can see presentations of my ongoing photography projects, take a closer look at the darkroom where I create handmade prints, and learn about my workshops. As the studio is not often easy to access, this is a unique chance to get a glimpse into my creative process and work environment.

BIO:
Originally from the Czech Republic, based in Oslo, Norway since 2010.
Primarily focusing on portrait work, a personal diary project, and architecture, I am drawn to capturing
quiet moments—ordinary scenes where subtle changes unfold, whether over an extended period or an
instance. I use analogue cameras, as I believe they provide a tangible time stamp to my projects.
In my artistic pursuits, I prioritize the creation of physical objects over traditional gallery exhibitions, opting
for book publishing. Collaborative efforts are integral to my practice, frequently partnering with Julie
Hrncirova for joint exhibitions. One ongoing project, “Notes,” serves as a perpetual and evolving diary,
continuously built and reorganized.
Working with my archive, I enjoy crafting new narratives from visual fragments, tangling stories to create
fresh meanings. Currently, my focus is on creating a new book featuring collected photographs from
ordinary daily life—a documentation of the ever-flowing time around me, offering an intimate window
into my experiences.
On the side of my own photographic practice I have started Norwegian Photogrpahy Now platform that
aims to represent Norwegian photographers, both local and abroad, as well as international photographers
based in Norway on a long-term basis.
This unique online space helps to connect the photographers together with institutions, publishers, editors,
and bloggers and bring discourse to the public about contemporary Norwegian photography. We bring
to light emerging talents, students and enthusiasts together with well-established names and aim for both
local and global reach. In addition, we want to provide updates on current trends in photo book publishing,
photography exhibitions held in Norway, photographic workshops, and public and virtual lectures. Our
goals are to make digital pictures tangible in forms such as photography exhibitions in online & real space,
video workshops, streamed interviews and lectures, limited print editions, and book publishing. We want
these to be easily accessible to photographers, enthusiasts, students and anyone interested in exploring and
learning about the medium of photography.
Norwegian Photography Now also currated Oslo Fotobok Festival in 2022.
