In 1961, at the age of 21, I was accepted into the National Academy of Fine Arts as the only student with a child at the time. I was not accepted into the Young Artists’ Society, where the following comment had been made by male colleagues: “We can’t have housewives here.”

After a divorce and a period of depression, I worked as an arts and crafts teacher and was a single mother. It wasn’t until 1971, when teacher and author Fridtjof Lande took over primary responsibility for our son Oleg, that I began creating images again.

I became involved in the leftist wave that swept across the West in protest against the Vietnam War, was active in the Artists’ Action Group and the Women’s Front, and worked at the Gras print workshop.

I made my debut at the age of 38 in 1979 with the solo exhibition People in Oslo, featuring paintings of dockworkers, including Unloading Coffee. In 1982, I was one of four women behind the exhibition Oslo – Oslo, which depicted the working environment at Nyland Mechanical Workshop. I contributed with the painting The Dismissal, among others.

After a grant-funded stay at the Nordic Art Centre in 1987, I remained in condemned offices on the island of Suomenlinna, outside Helsinki, for five years – far from the art-political struggles I had once engaged in back home. I painted and made woodcuts of people I met, with a focus on the fundamental loneliness of the human condition. In 1990, I held the solo exhibition Helsinki Portrait at Kluuvi Gallery, where the Finnish National Gallery purchased the woodcut French Girl in Helsinki – before any of my works had been acquired in Norway.

When I had to leave Suomenlinna, I did not return home, but went to Paris. I spent two years at the Cité Internationale des Arts. I frequented the Louvre, the Pompidou Centre, museums and galleries. I continued painting people I encountered and exhibited at the Cité both collectively and solo.

Back in Oslo, I joined the Palestine Committee and the activist group “Norway Out of NATO”. I took part in a Norwegian midwife project, visiting women’s clinics across the West Bank. Drawing from live models, I created large graphic works opposing Israel’s apartheid regime and supporting the Palestinian cause.

From 9 November to 15 December 2024, I presented the retrospective exhibition The Human Condition (Menneskets lodd) at the Old Munch Museum, featuring painting, drawing, and printmaking. The book SONJA KROHN RETROSPECTIVE was completed in a last-minute rush and went on sale at the finissage on 14 December.

The motif of mother and child, and the Madonna image, has occupied me since the 1970s. The fact that women give birth to everyone, nurse and care for them, makes it only natural that women should lead the vital call for peace in the world.

I have been working on a monumental Peace Image in my studio in recent years, but I have not succeeded in completing it. Traces of it can still be seen in my studio, and if I regain my strength after the retrospective, I will likely continue work on this utopian peace image – in which the motif of mother and child will play a central role.
