I create detailed pencil drawings based on photographs, often focusing on obscure fragments of the world. My drawings are frequently exhibited alongside sculptural objects that function as scenographies or environments, deepening their connection to the social spheres from which my motifs are drawn.
My motifs are often based on people, experiences, and environments from my own biography. My parents came from Chile to Sweden as political refugees in the 1970s, and my upbringing was shaped by the social and economic challenges that followed. I am deeply engaged with the ethical dimensions of using my own life in art. This intersects with narratives beyond my own, often evoking an underprivileged environment. It is also crucial for me to prevent my biography from becoming a spectacle that overshadows the art itself. My biography is not just a resource—it also risks overwhelming the work with sentimental appeal, something I actively seek to counterbalance.
Frieze, review by Nicholas Norton (https://www.frieze.com/article/cecilia-jimenez-ojeda-review-2024)
“…Jiménez Ojeda’s decision to base her intricate drawings on source images that require minimal skill or labour to produce can be seen as a statement on the inherent value of draughtsmanship itself. Perhaps creating drawings of everyday motifs with extreme levels of detail is one way of subverting capitalism’s demands for efficient production, its hierarchies of taste and its preference for the quick and effortless communication symbolized by phone images…”
