Yngvar Larsen has a long and diverse art practice of over 30 years. He works with sculpture, installations, graphics, photography and painting. Larsen comes from a conceptual and contextual art tradition where the works are more idea driven than style driven. Thematically, Larsen’s practice revolves around life’s big questions, with clear references to politics, ethics and religious issues.
For the past 25 years, he has lived abroad for long periods. He has lived in Hong Kong (China), Rotterdam (Netherlands), Miami (USA) and Waterloo (Belgium).

Window of Fear (Pink, Blue)

The 2two paintings consist of squares that look like minimalist windows with smoke coming out of them. One painting is pink and the other is light blue.
Both are painted with acrylic on canvas, 200x150 cm, in 2023, the photo is from when they were shown at Buskerud Art Center, This is a series of paintings I started with in connection with the war in Ukraine. It all started a week before the occupation, I was following the news with half an eye and heard the word Ukraine, and in the next moment I saw a burnt-out window. What struck me about the burnt-out window was the power of the simple visual form. A tight black rectangle, which dissolves into a soft black form at the top. As if Malevich's Black Square is dissolving (Malevich came from Ukraine). Photo:YL

The painting is painted with tempera on canvas, 100x130 cm, the photo is taken from the exhibition PAVILJONG I in 2022. The photo shows the painting hanging on a green wall in the pavilion in Hvervenbukta. The painting has a white, unpainted circle with the diameter of a Texaco oil drum. Around the circular surface, a spectrum of colors has been painted from green at the innermost to orange at the outermost. The color spectrum can be seen as deposits around the circle. photo: Yngvar Larsen

The photograph shows a horse's head in black and white, where the paint has been drawn downwards, so that it looks as if the horse is crying or standing in the rain.

In my studio

In the studio in the scenic Hvervenbukta, I will show samples from large series of paintings, and prints that I have worked on in recent years. It will also be possible to see documentation spanning over 30 years. In the old houses where the studio is located, there are also other artists and artisans that it will be possible to meet.
