Yu Shuk Pui Bobby is a visual artist and filmmaker based between Hong Kong and Oslo. Working across film, text, installation, sculpture, and performance, Bobby’s practice centers on themes of identity construction, cultural displacement, and family mythology. Her work often reflects her personal experiences as an “escaper” navigating multiple languages without a fixed mother tongue, creating layered narratives filled with humor, surrealism, and empathy.

Through filmmaking, she seeks to foster dialogue and share knowledge, experiences, and emotional resonance with diverse communities. Bobby frequently investigates familial histories, generational trauma, and inherited legacies, blending fictional elements with authentic lived experiences. Her practice is marked by an ongoing obsession with identity, carefully constructing semi-fictional narratives that explore how memory shapes both personal and collective histories.

Bobby holds a BA from Hong Kong Baptist University and an MFA from Oslo National Academy of Fine Art. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at The Shophouse (2024), Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences (2022), Parasite (2017), Tomorrow Maybe Gallery (2017), VI VII Gallery (2024), Podium (2022), Galleri BOA (2021), K4 Gallery (2021), Kunstnernes Hus (2021), Swatch Art Peach Hotel Shanghai (2017), A Place Gallery & Studios Orlando (2016), Youkobo Art Space Gallery Tokyo (2016), and Listhus Gallery Ólafsfjörður (2016). In 2023, Bobby received the Best Director award at the 17th Freshwave Film Festival in Hong Kong.

In my studio

I’m currently preparing for my upcoming solo exhibition The Piles We Carry, opening at UKS on May 9th, 2025. Visitors to my studio will get a behind-the-scenes look at the work-in-progress production, including video-making, large-scale soft sculptures, and installation development.

The exhibition explores the body’s hidden narratives and inherited discomforts, focusing on how we process personal and collective pain through humour, storytelling, and shared experience. At the heart of the project is a situational comedy documentary that reenacts my family’s shared experience with haemorrhoids and our journey toward healing.

Studio visitors will be invited into my personal process, witnessing how intimate stories take shape through playful, material experimentation.
