I’m fascinated by how human knowledge relates to reality and how we narrate and construct the world based on our own experience of it. By placing my works in borderlands where the idea of human autonomy is challenged – where our bodies overlap and merge with our surroundings and/or other bodies – I seek to explore other possible worlds. Death and transience are central themes in my artistic practice, and my sculptural works are often activated over time as they break down, fall apart, or are consumed by other organisms. The materials I work with often present tangible resistance in the process. Instead of forcing the material into a predetermined form, I must allow for a dynamic dialogue where a compromise can be formed – a collaboration that challenges my own authority over the material.
Over the past year, I have explored reliefs in OSB board, drawing inspiration from architectural ornamentation and vanitas motifs. The fragmentary board forms a diverse unity that I feel a connection to. By engaging in time-consuming processes with OSB, a relatively inexpensive and often overlooked material, I aim to understand how values are created in today’s society and how they relate to time – what constitutes eternal value in a world marked by crises, declines, and rapid technological development? What does the idea of eternity entail in terms of function?
