Raustein, John

Various Textile Techniques

In my artistic practice I explore the material, technical and conceptual possibilities of textile traditions and handicrafts.

The goal underlying these explorations is to delve deeper into questions related to personal identity and memory. I think there is a universal understanding about textile materials, which enables them to have a unique ability to convey stories and trigger recollections and memories.

The works communicate mental and tactile memories: what it was like as a child to run your fingers along the fringe of a lampshade, embroidery on a tablecloth, ruching on a curtain, or the unpleasantness of sitting on a tram seat that still retains the warmth of the previous passenger.

Viewers are invited to engage in mental memories recreated in the form of associative objects, sculptural installations and social commentaries, often with a humorous aspect
