Fleming, Pete

I approach the digital image from a materialist position. Starting with light and touch, my installations deal with the sensual and haptic nature of digital images. I create situations that embrace my wider conceptual practice of “becoming-with” the digital image, wherein images are not discrete ‘things’ but in the words of Karen Barad “phenomena-in-their-becoming”. This means that images materialize through and within a relationship of interdependence with the rest of the world.

In stark contrast to the rigid binaries of ‘cause and effect’, ‘individual agency’, and ‘subject-object’ that define the birth of photography, an intra-active position argues that the agency within an image emerges from the relationships we have with each other, with physical matter, with discourse, and is always ‘in process’. By thinking and making images intra-actively, that is; within and with the surrounding muddle of imaging equipment, archives, and sensory organs, my work articulates this composite nature of digital media as it moves between servers, fingertips, light emissions, and feelings.
