Carr, Anja

Sculpture, costume, performance, installation, photography and video

Anja Carr transforms animals and toy-figures in a theatrical, adult world. The works follow a dream-or nightmarish logic with no limits between genders, humans and animals, children and adults. Carr explores the «abject» – things between subject and object, that we often find repulsive. Travel + Leisure Magazine (NYC, 2015) writes: «Carr’s performance art, part My Little Pony, part Paul McCarthy, explores adolescence and sexuality.» iD magazine (London 2017) elaborates: «(…) children’s characters are often brought to life, from Pippi Longstocking to a bodybuilder dressed as a Ninja Turtle, (…) pointing to the way domestic space is gender-coded, and shapes our psyche (…)»
