Engen Larsen, Simen
Drawing, collage, sculpture
My work consists of searching and archiving fragments of photographs from printed matter. Collage and drawing are often combined. Through this archive and the further reworking process I explore a specific resonance that I find in the photos. I sample pictures to tell alternative versions of our contemporary condition. With this I expose the need to break up preconceived ideas that are formed over time. Ideas that are rooted in the way our brain applies meaning to the impressions we are exposed to and that are influenced by the continuous production of stereotypes by the media. The work aims at revealing uncertainties of memory and the plasticity of identity, which seems closely connected.
